We began writing our movie script this week. In the script, we had to focus on describing the main aspects that we wanted to convey, including the problem, the solution, describing Yumi, what she does, and how she will help solve the problem. We also needed to briefly describe how she will work with regards to technology.
Our goal was to make the script concise, and to the point, with simple language that is catchy and clear to follow.
A few drafts and tweaks later, here is our script so far:
THE MOST UPDATED MOVIE SCRIPT SO FAR
Distracted driving is a major problem that causes almost 80% of all car accidents around the world. Mobile phones were found to be one of the most common driving distractions.
Everyone wants to reach their destination safely.
Drivers know that using their phone while driving is dangerous, yet they still give in to the temptation.
Meet YUMI - a driving companion that sits on your dashboard and reminds you to keep your eyes on the road and your hands off your phone.
Yumi is comprised of a few main components: an eye-tracking camera, a motion sensor, and a smart phone holder.
Upon entering the car, YUMI greets you with a cheerful gesture ensuring your drive will be pleasant.
While driving, YUMI’S gaze detection camera and motion sensor, recognize when you look at or reach for your phone.
In response, to looking at your phone for 3 seconds or more, the phone holder will slightly turn left or right. In response to reaching for your phone, Yumi will move backward in a subtle manner. These gestures act as a reminder that YUMI is keeping you safe from distractions.
Yumi recognizes when you’re using a navigational app and will continue ensuring you're driving safely while not disturbing your view of the map and directions.
Using gestures and movements, Yumi creates a bond between herself and the driver.
Throughout the drive, this bond will nudge the driver to consider Yumi’s reminders and drive safer.
At the end of the drive, Yumi bids you farewell in a cheerful manner before you exit the car.
With Yumi, we believe that over time driving safely will become your daily habit.
In addition to working on our script this week, we also continued to work on and improve Yumi. We printed new parts from the 3-D printer and modified her aesthetically, along with adjusting her size and dimensions.
Furthermore, we worked on the technological aspect, figuring out how to connect everything: the gaze detection camera, the servos, and the raspberry pi, to see how it would all work when connected to the actual physical prototype. Our team brainstormed other aspects of design and technology such as making Yumi white, which is an aesthetically pleasing and pleasant color that will look good inside the car on a dashboard.
Additionally, a motion sensor camera may be implemented in conjunction with gaze detection to enhance Yumi's job in the car and to make her job more accurate and in correlation with people's behavior while driving.
