First Semester Recap

Updated: Apr 19, 2022

It's been quite a semester! It was a full semester in terms of the work we had to do, teamwork; learning how to work effectively as a team, and keeping the ball moving at all times. Continuously getting feedback and knowing how to implement and incorporate it in the best way so we can continue to move forward, improve Yumi, and better solve the issue of distracted driving.

It was interesting to see how broad everything was at the beginning, the problem and how we were trying to resolve it. Now we're at the end of the semester and things are more clear and narrow, and just because things are narrowed down, that doesn't mean they're not helping, but quite the contrary, it feels like now that we are more focused, and our solution is more focused, it can do a better job of tackling the problem, and it can target a specific aspect of distracted driving. After gaining more insights, we will be exploring Yumi's greeting at the beginning of the drive, her farewell at the end of the drive, and a few gestures and feedbacks throughout the drive. Of course, we need to keep in mind that Yumi is there to help the driver drive better and not further distract him/her. This is the challenge for us moving forward, but we are optimistic that, with the right approach and the correct steps, we can create an appropriate and good physical object for the car. It is possible that we will have positive feedback during the drive, or perhaps we will focus more on small, albeit subtle, negative feedbacks as a kind of punishment reinforcement, when the driver does something undesirable, such as touching the phone while driving. As far as technology is concerned, we need to consider its implementation, the size of the object, and such so we can integrate a raspberry pi and other technologies, and also consider the possibility of using eye/gaze detection technology to grasp the driver's distraction in real time.

Looking forward to next semester!
